The journey of the Department of English started from the inception of Udalguri  College. The Department is one of the initial Departments introduced in 1979. Among the teachers who rendered their valuable service to the Department, the names of  Mr Jacob Mochahary, Mr R R Sapkota maybe enumerated. Subsequently, Mr Saroj Kumar Basumatary joined as the first Head of the Department after the institution was brought under the Deficit-Grant-in aid system by the state government. 

The Department has been catering to the academic needs of the students both at H.S. and Degree levels. Till 2001, only regular (General) Course Subjects — General English and Alternative English- at UG level were offered. The Major courses were introduced in the year 2002. Since then, the students of 18 batches have successfully completed graduation in English under the guidance of the dedicated teachers of this Department. Many of our alumnae are serving the society in various positions in their variegated capacities. 

Presently, the UG (CBCS) courses – Regular and Honours- affiliated to Bodoland University and Higher secondary Courses under AHSEC are offered by the Department.
